Quiet signs your dog might be in pain

Dogs rarely cry out. Here are the small changes worth noticing.

By Dr Ioanna Petrou · 29 September 2026

What pain can look like

Dogs hide discomfort well. Watch for reluctance to jump into the car, stiffness after rest, licking one spot, panting at rest or changes in temper.

Older dogs who 'just seem old' are often living with arthritis pain.

What to do at home

Keep walks short and steady, use non-slip rugs and raise food bowls if bending seems hard.

Never give paracetamol or ibuprofen. Both can be very dangerous for dogs.
