Rabbit diets: why hay comes first

Hay keeps teeth and tummies healthy. A simple guide to the 80–15–5 rule.

By Dr Tom Ashby · 14 September 2026

Hay, hay and more hay

Rabbit teeth grow all the time. Chewing long fibrous hay wears them down and keeps the gut moving.

Offer an amount roughly the size of your rabbit every day, and refresh it often.

Greens and treats

Leafy greens such as romaine, parsley, coriander and dill are ideal. Fruit and carrots are treats, not staples.

Warning signs

A rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings for more than a few hours needs to be seen the same day.
